Whipple Hill Trail Map

The Whipple Hill Conservation Area is located in the southeast corner of Lexington, Massachusetts bordering on Winchester and Arlington. It consists of 120 acres of varied landscape and Whipple Hill, at 374 feet, is the highest point in Lexington and affords a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. Two parking areas are available. One, shown at the top of the map off of Johnson Road in Lexington, and the second, at the bottom of the map, off of Summer Street. Click map for larger view. Click

This fallen tree is just one of many sizable trees and branches that were brought down by the early snow storm last October.

Summer Solstice

It is said by some that the Indians would gather on Whipple Hill at sunset on the Summer Solstice. At that time, the sun should set directly behind Mt. Monadnock. Is Mt. Monadnock in the photo?

Unfortunately, the spring has also brought some other changes. There is the addition of a dining room set and someone's "artistic" attempt to improve on nature.

Late Summer 2010...

The dry weather has dramatically reduced the pond water level. Below are before and then after three days of rain totally near 2.5 inches. Notice that in the eastward view before the rain the entire foreground region in the shadow is simply a mudflat.

Dozens of bullfrogs jumped into the Pond as I circled, some skimming 20 feet before diving. Finally, this lady paused long enough for a photo.
